Praise Him in Joy and in Sorrow

Eat, Love, Praise Him

In times of joy and in times of sorrow? Yes! Especially, in times of sorrow. He is the master planner. He is sovereign. For these reasons we can know the times are sorrow are for His purpose, too. As it reads in Jeremiah 29: He knows the plans He has for us. It doesn’t say the time it takes for Him to fulfill His plans in us.

Sorrow comes from pain and hurt and disappointment and confusion, but joy comes in times of sorrow knowing God is sovereign, relying upon Him to make sense of those times, and accepting that even the times that bring us the greatest sorrow are of Him.

Psalm 136, NIV reads, in part:

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever.
Give thanks to him who alone does great wonders. His love endures forever.
Give thanks to Him who by His understanding made the heavens. His love endures forever.
Give thanks to Him who divided the Red Sea. His love endures forever.
Give thanks to Him who led His people through the desert. His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the One who remembered us in our low estate. His love endures forever.
Give thanks to Him who gives food to every creature. His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever.

He is sovereign. We are here by His divine will, His divine breath.
He ordains when and that we are born and die from this earthly life.

Today it is with deep sorrow that I lead to find joy in Him.
A special child of God is struggling with a rare form of cancer and fighting for her life.
Her mother and family by her side, they find a way to find strength and hope and joy and delight in her life.

I pray it is not in God’s plans to give Mary Evelyn angel wings just yet and I pray that in His mercy He might come to her rescue with a miracle healing. I know that God is caring and loving and compassionate. His ways are not our ways.

In her short life, she has brought a community together in prayer. She has brought great joy and light to her family. Our compassionate God has given her family and friends time in this journey. Time for laughing and loving and playing and sharing, in spite of the cancer she is fighting.

Our loving God gave her family an opportunity to create family memories at Disney World just last month. And, for Mary Evelyn to feel like a princess as she tried on pageant gowns and sparkling ball gowns at Once in a Lifetime Events while her mother admired her and praised her. She was truly as sparkling and dazzling as any princess.

How confusing to us that such a delightful child, or any child, or any soul would have to battle such an ugly, unforgiving disease. Many do everyday in hospitals everywhere.
We go along our daily lives so often ambivalent to the suffering in our own communities. Certainly, we could offer our prayers for comfort and healing.

Mary Evelyn’s experience has reminded me to pray heartily for others in need. For those who are in a daily battle with medical conditions, whose time on this earth is jarred by events not possible of our human understanding. We are reminded that even in this; our God has a plan to bring it to a greater good; to increase the quality of time together, to jar a community of people, to leave an everlasting imprint upon our hearts.

I am brought back to Psalm 136 in which God’s endless love never fails. Even when in our human understanding, we can not make sense of sorrow such as this. God’s love, His compassion, His mercy never fails.

Rare is anything that compares with the sorrow involving a child. I am quickly reminded of the fragility of life. I stop in my tracks to beg forgiveness of our Lord. How shallow I have been with my own life, with the blessings He continues to shower me with. How I take His provision for granted.

I take pause to recount, no longer counting all my troubles as in prayers of the past week. And, indeed, by society’s standards, I have plenty to recount: unemployment, loss of income, financial crisis, maladies, physical recovery from an accident and so on, but in reflection, I have lost my focus on all the Lord has abundantly supplied.

The Lord is our great provider. The Psalm confirms, He provides for every creature great and small. And, He has provided for me and my family-shelter, food, clothing, just enough of our needs to be attended to and not enough to bring us to complacency, so that we might be completely dependent upon Him and lean into Him with deeper yearning.

My health is strong, though I might have a limp in my walk due to my knee trauma, I function. Though my daughter required a month of physical therapy, He stopped the damaged vehicle within one inch of her and provided her safety. Though I might be battling maladies, as do my children, they are nothing as the battle cancer requires.
Though my husband was sent to war, he returned without physical harm. Though my children act out as teenagers, they are home safe and sound and at night.

I am not talking about “all the starving children in India or China” as you may have heard in your childhood, someone always has it worse than you and you should be grateful for the lima beans on your plate, I am talking about our habits of focusing on our lack instead of our habits praying for others in their true battles; not battles of Life, but battles for Life.

I am suggesting a complete re-framing of our thoughts. To focus on the joy in spite of the sorrow. To see God’s abundant blessings, in spite of the constant obstacles and struggles we juggle daily. I am suggesting that we take time to be truly thankful for our Lord’s provision and to truly Joy in our Lord.

I pray that God has a different plan for Mary Evelyn and her family than circumstances would suggest, but I know God delights in His child, Mary Evelyn, and has given her a life of significance and that her family has been abundantly blessed as have her friends and community.

Thank you, Father for the love and support that surrounds her. Thank you, Father for the medical care and providers and the quality of care she is able to have in her time of need simply by being placed right here in our community. Thank you, Father for her smile, for the twinkle in her eye, for her life that reminds us to live in joy and to give thanks to you.

What brings you joy?

What brings you joy?

I love to meditate on the part of God’s word that says: “Joy comes in the morning.” Psalm 30.

It’s a gift I enjoy anticipating.

What brings you joy? Today, the though was tapping at me persistently as I was trying to get through the morning pain of my swollen knees from a recent trauma.
The thoughts kept fleeing through my mind.

Grocery shopping. I know, but I love it. I love the thrill of making wise choices and delighting in the plethora of foods available to us. I especially joy in a trip to Costco with promises of surprises on every aisle. I see the plump blackberries in the extra large carton, which promises me more than two or three berries before the kids raid them. I love the thought of an entire crate of crisp, juicy Asian pears. I smile knowing every time I open the refrigerator those little mozzarella balls, sold in a large container packed in water will still be bobbing around by the week’s end, calling for some fresh basil, tomato and balsamic vinegar.
Oh, and how I joy in going to the DeKalb farmer’s market. The variety of foods, the smells, the people, the goods from around the globe speak volumes about our world. I love discovering new fruits with my 10 year old in tow. We make a list and head home where she goggles each new discovery and we anticipate trying one on our next trip.
Additionally, trips to these stores means our dinner and lunch menus will be delightful: stuffed Jerusalem artichokes, butternut squash lasagna, lemon pesto chicken, fresh figs and stilton bleu cheese. Oh, good food, good eating, these things bring me joy.

With a large family of five kids and a large house to fit them and the belongings, my days are full of household chores. Most days I do feel like Cinderella; oh how I wish there was time to go to the ball! But, there is joy on the rare days I open the laundry room and everyone’s laundry is washed, folded and put away. There is joy when the carpets are clean from all the living that goes on here. It sort of punctuates that I am keeping up with the keeping up. There’s nothing like a sparkling bathroom and fresh sheets after a shower to bring me joy and the best night’s rest of the week.
When things are orderly, like my daughter’s room, which is just off the kitchen on the main floor, and the kitchen, which is always calling for a short order cook and a dishwasher, I can feel at rest for but a few simple moments. I can reflect on Joy that comes with calm.

I can anticipate actually having 30 minutes of free space that doesn’t come as a result of exhaustion, but as a result of peace and order. I can allow myself to feel the joy that the Lord has in store for me everyday, but that I’m too busy washing away with my Clorox bottle.

What brings us joy? Moments with our kids. A nice meal shared with our family. The end of a day well spent. A clean house, which means no further demands upon us. These things certainly add to our joy.
And, how do we increase our joy? Probably simply this: take time to reflect on our joy. Acknowledge the joy that is in our life. Ask God for more. Ask God to remove the clutter, so we can receive the joy He has in store for us.
Today, I am looking for more joy. And, I better hurry, the laundry hampers are empty, the carpets have been steam cleaned, we had a great meal of London Broil au jus and asparagus and I know by noon, it will all be creeping up upon me again.
It must be time for a trip to DeKalb.

Joy in your day! Joy in your life! Joy in our Lord!

Eat, Love, Praise Him Press Release

As Eat, Pray, Love opens in theaters today, I am asking Christian viewers to pause to consider the content and test it against their Christian faith. Are the ideas and philosophies consistent with scriptural teachings? Is the movie focused on prayer to the God of our Christian faith?

Is it simply a form of entertainment with a delightful, award-winning superstar, based on the life of a charming best-selling author with a sense of adventure?

Or are there ideas of mysticism, other religions and seeds of doubt placed before your eyes which could ultimately lead you off the path God intends for you?

I simply ask that you prayerfully consider the content of this movie.

Perhaps by following my blog, you may take pause to consider your beliefs and apply them to your life and your dreams in a meaningful way.

I am praying you will hunger for the truth and the real love Jesus Christ offers freely to you.

I am hoping you will find truth in my book Eat, Love, Praise Him.
I am posting a press release hoping to claim the victory and find a publisher for my book in the very near future. Whether it is ever published or not, matters not, for He has already claimed the victory for all of us. He knows the truth and sees the truth. He is the father of all truth. I hope this movie and my book give you cause to poke around at your own beliefs and wake up into the fullness of His love.

Is EAT PRAY LOVE Leading Women down the Wrong Road?

(June 1, 2010) – Elizabeth Gilbert’s life reads like romantic fiction in her sweeping travelogue EAT PRAY LOVE. Her soul-searching following a difficult divorce takes her to Italy, India and Indonesia. These exotic lands beckon and ultimately do not disappoint the reader hungry for all the juicy details of Gilbert’s quest for self-discovery as the bestselling memoir continues to captivate women for three years and 5 million books later. The feature film starring Julia Roberts will likely only add to the juggernaut that is EAT PRAY LOVE. But will women find truth as they travel Gilbert’s trail of adventure and appetite?

JACKIE ARNOLD was captivated by Gilbert after seeing her interviewed on Oprah and dove eagerly into the book while facing many personal challenges in her own life. But as she read she grew increasingly concerned that younger women especially would be placing themselves in spiritual peril if they follow the path Gilbert lays out. Easy compromise on essentials while claiming God-centered faith is the central problem of EAT PRAY LOVE. But there are so many other confusing directions pursued by Gilbert that Arnold felt compelled to answer. The result is Arnold’s journey into the heart of truth, EAT LOVE PRAISE HIM, Unpacking your Dreams on a Journey of Faith.

Presented in lilting prose, Arnold defends the faith with all the joy of savoring great food and travel found in EAT PRAY LOVE, while also inviting women on a pilgrimage to truth. Arnold is uniquely positioned to pen EAT LOVE PRAISE HIM. Her passion for travel has taken Jackie to over 30 countries and as she invites women to travel with her on the journey within, they will find real satisfaction for the hunger only God can meet. She encourages women to dream again and to follow God on a journey of faith.
Sample Interview Questions:

• Why are women so taken with EAT PRAY LOVE and what 'wrong road' will that lead them on?
• What are you hoping women will learn from EAT LOVE PRAISE HIM?
• Explain the premise of your subtitle: Unpacking your Dreams on a Journey of Faith.
• Tell us about your journey of faith.
• How does your emphasis on the importance of a journey of faith also take you on a different path concerning love and food?
• You plan to lead a trip to Israel in the future. What is the goal of this trip?

JACKIE ARNOLD’s experience with travel, food, and faith makes her a lively and entertaining guest. Her heart is to help women more fully live out their faith. She has worked in newspaper, radio, marketing and currently, as a freelance writer. She hopes to have an interested publisher who will commit to publish her book EAT LOVE PRAISE HIM by Spring 2011.

It takes a village and an online community of friends!

As a little girl, did you have a dream when you grew up?
Were you going to be the first in your family to go to college?
Were you going to grow up to be Miss America?
Were you going to marry prince charming?
Were you going to have a beautiful family?
Were you going to travel the world?

Well, I did. I had all those same dreams. And, the best part is, by God's grace, I've actually gotten to see many of those dreams come true.
Another dream I had was to make a difference in the world in a big way and to become a published author. While I have published a few small things-many magazine articles, tons of newspaper articles, a cookbook, and a couple of childrens books as a freelance writer, I haven't yet reached my dream to be an author. But, I'm working on that. The best part is, you can come along with me on my journey and help me become a published writer who really makes a difference in people's lives.

You see, traditional writing doesn't pay much, unless you happen to have a one-hit wonder, but writer's somehow are satisfied with the impact they make on reader's lives. For me, I have a message to share that will make a huge difference in people's live. It's a book that will encourage readers to unpack their dream and come along on a journey of faith. It's a book that contains the truth and will have a lasting impact. It's a book with a message that can keep Christians from falling asleep in their faith or from being easily lured into the traps of this new age.

My dream to become a published writer has its road blocks.
Traditional publishing can take months to two years to bring a book to bookstore shelves. And, gaining a publisher's interest is sometimes a difficult challenge.
I have a message that just can't wait. I have a dream that just can't be contained. You can actually help.

I'm just a typical Girl Next Door. I've had successes and failures, strife and joy.
Even in my forties, I am asking still "What do I want to be when I grow up?" I wonder if the majority of people are ever able to clearly articulate this and then make that happen? Kudos to those who do-the teachers, pilots, doctors and nurses. Us creative types don't fit so easily into a title and others simply get off course raising families and responding to life.

I still hold onto many dreams, hoping they'll come true. I want to be a published author, but no time more than now. You see, having earned several college degrees (a bachelor's and two master's), I asked God, what it is He wanted me to be when I grew up and He answered with a lightning bolt moment one day in the bookstore.
A writer! He wants me to be a writer, but of course.
But, it took two more years of sending resumes and praying to realize God was serious about my vocation and patient while I worked through the details.

Again one day, in the middle of bible study, He sent a lightning bolt moment with the Holy Spirit to motivate me and told me to write a book NOW!

Having recorded all the grace He shows me in journals, I reviewed the many times I would pray and He would answer me in scripture and grace. I realized God had been whispering to me in my daily walk of life for a long time. So, I set out to write a book called God Whispers. It was nearly finished in its roughest first draft in November when God opened my eyes to an international bestseller on the shelves at bookstores everywhere. It was then I realized, I was being called to write a Christian response to this book that was taking readers by storm, but away from God.

I realized then that readers needed a book option filled with truth. I realized then that God had positioned me to write a book called Eat, Love, Praise Him.

My dream of becoming a published author who makes a real difference is possibly just around the corner. But greater than my dream is my desire to live for Him and bring glory to His name. My desire is to help others know Him and see His love and grace in their lives.

All I have to do is show up for the job of writing and blogging because there is no way that I can write a book on my own merit and have it published with quick turn around while readers are in need of the truth right now. But, with a little help from my friends, God's grace, and the right publisher, all things are possible.

I hope you will take part in my dream and ask your moms and sisters and best friends and face book friends to spread the message about my book Eat, Love, Praise Him, and to link in and follow my blog (www.eatlovepraise.blogspot.com). The more readers, the more credibility for a publishing house, and the greater their interest to invest in my book. I thank you for following my blog and for showing your support.

It takes one or two minutes and a few clicks of the mouse to follow me and spread the word-viral marketing is the quickest way to get the word out. And, you have the power to do that. A grass roots gathering could help me gain readership and momentum and locate the right Christian publisher even before the movie releases on Friday!

Who knows, helping me achieve my dream could give you reason to pause and consider your dream. How is God calling you? What does He have dreamed for you?

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, To prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11 NIV).

Look for the press release as my next blog posting.
Pass my blog link around (www.eatlovepraise.blogspot.com)
And, look for my book, Eat, Love, Praise Him on bookshelves everywhere you find Eat, Pray, Love. (Praying its on shelves by Easter 2011).

I want readers to have an option for truth, so they can take a stand for truth and know the one true God.

Heavenly Hamburger Helper

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? (Matthew 6:26 NIV).

No time more than now have I had to reflect upon the words of Matthew. It's not surprise, we have all felt the affects of the economic crisis, and my family is caught right up there with our fellow citizens in the midst of it all. Two degrees, no job offers for me. My husband lost his job and two months later was offered a new position with a significant pay cut. Recently, the second job he holds to keep us afloat was cut due to the economy. We are feeling the financial crunch in a significant way. It is faith that gets us through.

My pact with God is that I will keep writing the checks to pay the bills, if He keeps providing the cash flow. And, He is an amazing provider.

With the most recent news of the second income loss, comes greater reductions. My recent fervent conversation with God was that I'd keep writing those checks, even this month, but in addition to the monthly bills, He would also have to take care of feeding my family until the next pay check. (As if He doesn't already do this, but it gave me comfort to specifically point out this need).

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? (Math 6:26 NIV).

I, like the birds of the air, am not sowing, no job offers come my way. (Yet, I have actively pursued them). Not to mention, I am very focused on God's calling for me to write this book (Eat, Love, Praise Him), and care for my family. Five children are a huge gift from God and it takes constant work to manage and care for them. Where would a job even fit in at this time? It doesn't make sense, but God tells me to trust Him, keep praying, and walk in faith and obedience. So, I do my best.

Do you know how He responds? He is so loving and so faithful! Every check I wrote this month, He covered. And, as far as the feeding of my family? Here is the grace and humor He used to fulfill that prayer:

On Tuesday, a friend in need called me over. It was dinnertime. She had food, but no focus to prepare it for her family. So, I prepared it and was, ultimately, invited to join her for dinner (with my children).

On Wednesday, I was running my errands and decided to drop in on a friend to wish her well on a family trip she was preparing to take. As I was leaving, she asked, "Would you do me a favor? Would you take a casserole I made last night home to your family so I don't have to waste it?" And, she pulled out the loveliest chicken casserole I have ever seen. She had a handful of fresh vegetables that would have otherwise wasted on her week long trip away.

The next day, I tossed a salad and invited a friend to join me for the casserole. No reason to horde the food. God will continue to provide for our needs. Has He not already shown me that? That beautiful casserole somehow provided lunch with a friend and her daughter, two dinners for myself and family and a tasty lunch for me. It's amazing how He can stretch one casserole!

This is nowhere near the end of His grace.
The next night, I cooked up the vegetables my friend provided and made some fluffy biscuits from scratch for a perfect country vegetable platter. I'm a good southern girl, of course I have shortening and flour as staples in my pantry at all times. Again, we had a nourishing meal and full bellies.

The next night, we had a late lunch and were winding down our day near 7:30 at night. We were out in the neighborhood and my daughter and I smelled someone grilling on this typical summer night. The aroma was awakening family memories of summer cookouts past, our taste buds, and our tummies.

"Wouldn't you just love to have a hamburger tonight?" we said almost at the same time. Now, I can't remember the last time we had a family invitation to dinner at someone's house, but we jokingly said, "Yes! Why doesn't someone invite us over to cookout?" We continued our evening jaunt for another thirty minutes, enjoying the warm summer night. On the last leg of our journey, we passed a friend and her children, whom we haven't seen in a couple of weeks. We chatted. And, almost as if in passing, she said, "We're going to throw some hamburgers on the grill when we get home, if you haven't eaten yet, we'd love to have you and the kids over."

She did not know of our earlier thoughts of grilling burgers. How could this happen? How could she know that at now already 8 pm, we had not yet eaten dinner? We squealed in delight and agreed. After she left, we giggled over our earlier comments about wanting a hamburger and an invitation to grill out. And, how God heard our every word!

God has such an amazing sense of humor. Not only another meal, but grilled hamburgers-the request of our heart!

We darted home to rummage for the rest of the lettuce from the salad and onions and condiments to share with our hostess.

Of course, God wanted to show us that He had prepared not simply a burger for us, but a banquet. Not only did we have grilled burgers, they were smothered in grilled onions, mushrooms, cheddar cheese and bacon! These were mouth-watering, gourmet-style, grilled hamburgers-straight from our Father in heaven.

Our hostess was also going on a week long summer trip and offered us milk, bread, pizza and barbecue that she was planning to toss out before leaving!

I know what you are thinking. That the food and meals provided were charity, but you would be wrong. You can walk into my house at any time and see a pantry stocked with canned goods, and, until recently when the thermostat blew, two freezers full of frozen foods. These friends were not providing due to our circumstances. They were not yet even aware of the second loss of income. These friends, good natured and God-centered at heart, were following the calling of the Holy Spirit. God was showering my family and me with a week's worth of food and grace.

I am eager to do my own grocery shopping for my family in the near future. I love grocery shopping. It brings me pleasure. And, God always provides a bountiful harvest for my family. I have no doubt He will continue to do so.

This amazing week of God's grace has shown me how He is a great provider. How He feeds even the birds of the air and He will continue to provide and continue to feed my family, despite our current circumstances. I simply have to walk in faith and trust Him.

Imagine how peace might settle over our country at times like these, if each family would turn to the Lord in prayer and simply say, "I trust you, Jesus." Imagine the grace we'd see and the peace that would settle over our earth?

Imagine how even our tiniest offers of community touch the lives of our neighbors and friends. These women probably didn't know. They did what I have done many times before, they reached out to share with a friend some of the bounty God provides. In turn, they showed me and my family the very face of our Lord and His abundant love.

I pray that this week you see God's grace in a new way in your own life. And, you look for ways to share more of His grace and peace with others.

Steel Magnolias

Well, Suga', pull up a chair. Glass of sweet tea? I've got a pot of hot tea brewing, if you'd like.
Southern gals are right there with me, already seated at a perfectly appointed table, waiting for the ensuing conversation. If you don't know what I mean, join me for a spell and I'll share with you some inside perspective on the joys of being a Steel Magnolia.

Steel Magnolia(s) is the title of the 1989 Blockbuster movie starring Julia Roberts.
Coincidentally, I played the same lead role (Shelby), in community theatre overseas while living in a military community as a military spouse. I won the European equivalent of a Tony for leading actress in a community play. This brought me as close to fulfilling my dream of becoming an actress and playing on Broadway as I would come which, in spite of being accepted to American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC, (1985), was never realized. Just enough recognition to leave stars in my eyes. And, a dream of living in NYC one day.

I am a Southern girl true and true. I was born in South Florida, which due to all the permanent resident snow birds, isn't truly considered a southern state by true southerners, in spite of its southern most location.

My daddy was from Charleston, South Carolina, and that, however, makes me a true Southerner. That, the fact I love grits and sweet tea and can hostess a gathering to rival any bed and breakfast, deems me quite the southerner. Plus, I have lived or vacationed for extended stays in every southern state-Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. And, have been influenced by the history and culture of Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas by way of my sister who has lived in these states for two decades. I am a true southern girl who can whip up a batch of biscuits, cook collards, and throw down a full meal for a crowd. It brings me pleasure. I am ever grateful God placed me in the south and gifted me with a few cooking skills. I love to eat. I love the gathering of family and friends. And, I love to hostess. He knows the delights of my heart!

The definition of a Steel Magnolia brings to mind the full and fragrant, yet delicate blossoms of the ever-towering magnolia tree, so prevalent in the south. Defined as a southern woman who is strong, independent, and yet very feminine Steel Magnolias, as southern women are oft referred, have an inner strength, a steely character, a determined and gritty persistence and a delicate, radiant sophistication; a touch of God's grace. They are resourceful, prepared, willing, service-oriented, and ever ready with a shoulder to lean on and a glass of sweet tea, or at least a tasty crumb of something delicious.

You've seen the email circulating where life takes all sorts of girl friends for all sorts of life events.
Steel Magnolias are that kind of girl friend. Because they have heart. They have soul. They know and love God and can show you love and kindness as a result.

In a season of desert, I cried to the Lord. I prayed for Godly women to come into my life. I prayed for Godly friends. God delighted to answer my prayer. In response, He showered me with lots and lots of beautiful, Godly friendships. As a result, I am blessed with circles of new friends. Strength for the road of life ahead. And, a very special group of women we call Steel Magnolias. We meet at every chance. There's always ice tea or hot tea, a delicious morsel and especially a shoulder to share. We've made a pact for lifelong friendship. Together, life can not defeat us. Together, we will survive the storms ahead. Together, we can love our families, live our lives, and worship our wonderful God together. We have shared beliefs and values and God has perfectly appointed our group with common stories where we can learn and grow.
I can't wait to share more about my group of Steel Magnolias with you.

While you are brewing your next pot of tea, why don't you ponder your group of Godly friends? Do you have a group of Steel Magnolias to grow with? Make a list of your closest friends.

Reflect on the bible verses in Proverbs 4. There is good wisdom about guarding your heart and your relationships. The Bible teaches us to guard our hearts in every relationship so that nothing separates us from God. Reflect upon your relationships.

Then pray a special prayer to our loving Father and ask Him to grow your own group of Steel Magnolias. Your life with flourish and blossom just like the delicate blooms of the sturdy southern tree.

You will be abundantly blessed!

Eat!

Do you live to eat or eat to live?
God placed an abundance of good food for us on this earth. Why sleepwalk through life with the same menu night after night? Too many people walk through life with their eyes closed, purchasing the same food items week after week, and numb their taste buds in the process.
I recently discovered the State Farmer's Market. It was like food heaven! There was a plethora of delights from all over the world. Why settle for cereal when you can eat delightful dishes like cottage cheese with sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds as I did yesterday?
Maybe seeds aren't your thing, how about yogurt layered with fresh berries and granola? Starbucks and McD's makes a fortune off this menu item-someone's eating it.
Skip the gooey sugar glazed donut or the toaster streudel. Reach out for a more inventive breakfast. Today, I enjoyed 2 slices of turkey bacon. A slice of toasted organic bread with orange zest, cranberries and walnuts. And, a dish of fresh berries-raspberries and strawberries, with a dollop of mascarpone cheese. Mascarpone cheese? It costs about the same as cream cheese, but it's fresher, creamier, sweeter, and less 'expected.' It took less than five minutes to prepare and surprised my taste buds. When't the last time you surprised your taste buds?
With every bite, I thank God for giving me a menu bigger than bagels and bannanas.
God is so good to us. He offers us a wide variety of fruits and vegetables; a bountiful harvest. We should embrace His offering with gusto. Wake up your taste buds. Step up to the table. Provide more than sustenance to your family, provide nourishment and knowledge of God's abundant provision.
Last night, I prepared baked stuffed artichokes the size of two fists, with a prepared bruschetta toast on the side. Do you know my kids were so excited about that meal, which I prepared in less than 20 minutes, that one of my children was prompted to ask instead of a family birthday meal out at a restaurant, could I please cook two stuffed artichokes just for him. Now, that would be a simple celebration and save about $100!
The joy of introducing my family to the foods God has provided us is a little game in my household. In fact, we have a rule, one must try at least one bite of everything prepared for a meal. It's referred to as a Thank You bite. One tries the food to thank the cook for their effort, to thank God for the provision, and, ultimately, to see if picky taste buds might discover a new food to enjoy. With five children of our own, we often have extra teenage guests at our dinner table. They are all usually up for the one bite game, as it is a standing rule with rarely an exception.
Every single time someone new comes to our table, there is some food item that is new to them. This is unplanned and we marvel at how it happens each time. It has been as simple as a black olive, feta cheese, an artichoke, honey carrots or white chicken chili. And, usually, the guest is fairly welcome to the taste of their new food item. It is a great conversation starter about foods and the goodness of God's provision. It allows us to plant many seeds.
I am Italian, so naturally, I am enthralled with food period. Not to the extreme, mind you; self-control in all things. I am simply grateful God has provided so many wonderful delights for me to enjoy and that He has graciously skilled me in the kitchen.
When I walk through a grocery store or a farmer's market, it is better than a Godiva chocolatier-and that says a lot! I rarely leave with less than a dozen choices; it is so hard to say no to a fresh, crunchy red or yellow pepper, the promise of a cluster of vine ripe tomatoes, the thought of crisp Belgian endive, or the wonder of a ripening avocado. And, as I make my selections, I marvel at God's provision. How He is such a wonderful, masterful creator. And, how He takes care of each and every one of His creations. And, how He delights in us enough to provide such a variety of delightful foods. Afterall, He could have simply planted banana trees and said "eat all you want." I love bananas, but I also love carimbola, coconut, kiwi, blackberries, watermelon, and Asian pears. The list goes on.
Next time you wander through the countryside and see miles after mile of farmland, or take your weekly trip to a grocery store and see fresh produce, pause to count your blessings, thank the Great Provider, and consider what food you might try anew. You might consider adopting the one Thank you bite rule. Who knows you and your family might soon be exploring a bountiful harvest together.
Happy Harvest!

What Do Dreams Know of Boundaries? Amelia Earhart

My Dreams Have no Boundaries. Travel. Writing. Life Goals.
Surprisingly, I've been able to have many of my dreams come true.
I've earned diplomas, traveled extensively, and achieved many life goals.
Cinderella said to have faith in your dreams and, someday, your rainbow will come shining through.
I'm currently waiting on my rainbow. Learning to dance in the rain in spite of the storms of life around me, I'm writing a book and searching for a publisher. It's a book about dreams and believing and living your life on faith; it's a story about my personal journey of faith.
The world is tempting us to get caught up in materialism, spiritualism, hype, and Hollywood glamour. I'm hoping my girl-next-door story offers some insightful thoughts to help readers test the truth and say no to the deception of the modern world. When we stand for truth, we walk with integrity in our Christian faith, and serve Him with our whole heart!
Travel with me on a journey of faith, discover yourself, your dreams, and the one true God, maker of Heaven and Earth.
Maybe along the way some of your dreams will come true, too.
